According to Science, You Actually Can Have Too Many Friends August 28 2014, 0 Comments

Facebook may have no friend limit, but your brain does, according to evolutionary biology. In the book How Many Friends Does One Person Need?, British biologist Robin Dunbar explains the number of relationships we can maintain at any given time is capped at 150, Psychology Today reports.

This is because of the brain's neocortex size, according to Dunbar. And it's about quantity, not quality: those 150 relationships your brain can process aren't just those you consider bestie-level (a.k.a. your work-wife isn't hoarding all your brain space when she's sending you those funny GIFs and sharing her last cookie)—although each relationship is "reciprocal and based around general obligations of trust and reciprocity," says Dunbar, some are more intimate than others. He divides friendships into four layers or “Circles of Acquaintanceship” in your life. Your best friends make up the innermost circle, which is the smallest. Each successive layer can hold more people, but the level of emotional intimacy decreases the farther out you get. Science said it, but this is something we figured out when we were sending out invitations to our sixth grade birthday party.

Men's Skin Needs Love Too! August 17 2014, 0 Comments

For most women, healthy skin means a youthful, smooth, blemish-free complexion. More and more men are now starting to turn an eye to their own skin care and are ready to start making an investment in having clear, healthy skin. SO here is a quick and easy primer for the fellas on how to choose skin care products that work.

Skin Type

Skin type is important for men and women when it comes to skin care. Your skin type will dictate the type of products that you should and shouldn’t use on your face.

  • Oily skin will consistently have a shine to it no matter your activity level. People with this skin type often suffer from acne including blackheads and general irritation. If you have oily skin, your skin may feel greasy and pores may become clogged and enlarged fairly often.

  • Dry skin will often have a rough or uneven look to it. It will seem tight and even flake in some places. Oftentimes yif you have dry skin, your skin will seem red and chapped. People with this skin type rarely suffer from acne, but do have general problems keeping their face moisturized and the peeling can be painful in dry weather.

  • Combination skin is the most common skin type. This type of skin will have both oily and dry patches. Generally oily spots will be around the center of the face, the area around the eyes tends to be dry and the cheeks are fairly normal to dry.

Any of these skin types can be sensitive. The safest thing to do is to steer clear of harsh products no matter the skin typpe and use gentle fragrance-free products. For the most part, this may mean straying away from typical men’s products and using gentler products which are often heavy on fragrance and other hormone disrupting chemicals. These types of ingredients are designed to attract men to spend money, not to improve their skin in any way.

Skin Routine for Men

Even men should have a skin routine to keep them looking their manly best. Use a gentile liquid cleanser daily and an exfoliant weekly. If you are a man with sensitive skin, however, you may not want to use a scrub, scrubs can irritate and spark inflammation. If you shave regularly, that is plenty of exfoliation.

Avoid bar soaps for your face! They often clog pores very badly and cause breakouts.

Steer clear of alcohol, methanol, peppermint, and artificial fragrances (typically listed as parfum). All of these are irritants and should not be applied to the face ever and should only be applied to other parts of your body sparingly.

Well, I hope this was a helpful starter guide to the fellas out there and I expect to see some more beautiful faces as I walk down the street!

Commonly Used Antibacterial Chemical Banned in Minnesota May 21 2014, 0 Comments

It's widely used nationwide as a germ-killing ingredient in soaps, deodorants and even toothpaste, but it's being banned in Minnesota. Gov. Mark Dayton on Friday signed a bill to make Minnesota the first state to prohibit the use of triclosan in most retail consumer hygiene products. The Minnesota House and Senate passed it earlier last week because of health and environmental concerns about the chemical. The ban isn't due to take effect until Jan. 1, 2017, but one of its lead sponsors, state Sen. John Marty, predicted Monday that the odds are good that most manufacturers will phase out triclosan by then anyway.

Is Juice As Bad As Soda? May 08 2014, 0 Comments

As some of you know, I've been delving into the world of juicing over the past few months as I embark on my own health  and life balance journey. The one thing that concerns me about juicing is whether or not my juices take too much of the good stuff out of the fruits and vegetables I enjoy. After doing a little bit of reading I've adjusted some of my favorite recipes into what I like to call " thin smoothies". I call them "thin" because of their watery consistency, not because I think they are some type of magical weight loss tonic. Basically these beverages are fibrous, pulpy purees with lots of water added to give it a drinkable consistency.

Witch Hazel Uses For Better Natural Skin Care May 04 2014, 0 Comments

Despite the name, witch hazel isn't an ingredient for casting a magic spell although the effects of this shrub almost defy reason. Witch hazel is a very versatile plant whose oil has historically been used to heal damaged skin, close pores, relieve irritation and heal sores. Here are a few quasi-magical uses for witch hazel -- one of my all-time favorite cosmetic plants and a key ingredient in several of Sydelle Cosmetics' products.

  1. Make Acne Disappear
Witch hazel is very good for the reduction of visible acne. The application of witch hazel can reduce inflammation of pimples and other breakouts. Witch hazel is high in a substance called, tanin, a natural astringent that removes dirt and tightens pores. Two other compounds that occur naturally in the plant -- resin and procyanadin may also help reduce the swelling or inflammation that surrounds pimples.
  2. Rash Relief
Application of witch hazel can work magic on all types of rashes. It will help sooth and heal diaper rashes, it can also help with the itching and swelling of rashes from things like poison oak and poison ivy. In some instances it can even help with bug bites.
  3. Bruise Be-Gone
Applying witch hazel to a bruise three times a day will help it to heal faster. This also applies to under-eye bruises. Bruises develop when small blood vessels under the skin tear or rupture, most often from a bump or fall. Blood leaks into tissues under the skin and causes the black-and-blue color. Witch hazel helps blood vessels contract quickly and prevents additional blood from spilling out into the tissue surrounding damaged blood vessels.
  4. Skin Rejuvenation
Witch Hazel cleanses and tightens pores and helps treat varicose veins which gives skin an overall smoother, more vibrant appearance. Witch hazel is also gentle enough to be used on the face. just make sure that any products you use on your face with witch hazel are alcohol-free as alcohol can counteract some of the soothing benefits of witch hazel and actually increase redness and irritation.

Are You Wearing Too Much Makeup? May 01 2014, 0 Comments

Researchers Alex Jones at Bangor University and Robin Kramer at Aberdeen University in the U.K. photographed 44 white females in their early 20's for a study on whether women are overdoing it on makeup and the results probably won't surprise you.

They took a photo of the bare faced participants and then gave the women “a range of best-selling foundations, lipsticks, mascaras and blushers,” and told them to do their makeup for a night out on the town. They took and after poto for comparison purposes and showed the photos to both men and women.

The female participants thought the models looked better with slightly more makeup than the male participants did. However, all of the participants thought male observers would want the models to be wearing more makeup than female observers would.

They were wrong—men and women preferred the same amount of make up on average and hat amount was aboyut 60% of the makeup the models had actually applied.

Read more about the study here and see some cool photos of the models.
